The prestigious Gintong Aklat Awards, established in 1981, are given out regularly to outstanding book publishers based on the quality of the books they produce year after year. Managed by the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), the Awards are meant to recognize excellence in bookmaking in the country's book industry.

History:
The prestigious Gintong Aklat Awards, established in 1981, are given out regularly to outstanding book publishers based on the quality ofthe books they produce year after year. Managed by the BookDevelopment Association of the Philippines (BDAP), the Awards are meant to recognize excellence in bookmaking in the country's book industry.
Book entries are judged for all-around excellence, and are subjected to close scrutiny by three professional panels in bookmanufacture, design, and writing and editing. Entries mustmerit an excellent rating in each aspect of bookmaking in order to qualify for the gold prize. A book winner of the Gintong Aklat therefore will have been judged not only on its contents but on its totality as a book. Contest entries are divided over severalsubject categories-- literature, social science, religion, the arts,natural science, trade, textbook, and children's book.
Meant to recognize and encourage professional book publishing as an industry, the Gintong Aklat qualifies as participants only bonafide publishers engaged in book publishing as their main line of business.
During the Philippine Centennial celebration of the Philippine Revolution in 1998, the BDAP gave special Gintong Aklat Awards to professional book publishers for the best Philippine books published from 1988 to 1997. Special awards were also given to the best individual book professionals--writer, book designer, and printer. From some 300 prescreened entries, all published within the past ten years before the centennial year, thirty books made it to the final list, from which ten were selected to receive the gold prize.
